“Sure, but in the context of a snapshot of a region that shows wines that people mostly want to drink, then that’s a pretty good result. If you want profound wines, you have to be deeply invested in regenerative agriculture, otherwise those wines won’t exist. Dan Buckle is the chief winemaker at Yarra Valley’s Chandon, as well as running his own Circe brand, which is based on Hilcrest Road, near Paringa Estate. His roots are in the Mornington Peninsula, having grown up the family vineyard there and having helped his father plant the first vines at Chandon as a teenager in 1986. Stints at Coldstream Hills under James Halliday, as well as working in France led him to Yering Station, then a celebrated stint at Mount Langi Ghiran, before settling at what was then Domaine Chandon in 2012.
The name Maressa (from the Latin "maris" meaning "of the sea"), is a nod to the noble maritime history of the Port Phillip Bay area. The wine is quite focused with fresh fruit and persistent acidity driving the palate. The earthiness is reminiscent of previous vintages, a characteristic that we now regard as a hallmark of this Burn Cottage site. The 2021 vintage brought lower than average yields and cooler conditions throughout the growing season. Fruit quality was excellent with small bunches and berries providing superb concentration of flavours, fine supple tannins and good acid balance. During a career researching and teaching neuroscience at Monash University, Nadeson founded Lethbridge Estate with his partner Maree Collis.
Montalto Pinot Noir - a benchmark Mornington Peninsula style; red-fruited, supple, beautifully balanced. Thoughtful and evocative, the Two Paddocks 2024 shows exotic wild herb, red brick and shist derived aromatics. This drives the entry into an enveloping rich, warm, succulent and elegant mouthfeel. Black countered that recent vintages would likely play a part in that, and several of the wines were likely made to be consumed more readily – that even though there was a decently sized selection, it was still a limited survey. It’s an opportunity to collaborate with some exceptional vineyards and people across the state and produce wines that connect with our philosophy of making wine from the ground up. All of our decisions are focused on how we can do things better in order to minimise our impact on the environment.
Due to the warmer season, the palate delivers delicious dark fruits and savoury flavours which are complemented by fine-grained tannins. This wine was aged in a blend of new and seasoned French oak barriques for 10 months. Bright and aromatic, the nose delivers raspberry, strawberry and red cherry with savoury spice notes.
Aromas of spiced rhubarb, juicy red cherries, Asian five spice and vanilla mingle with earthy notes and the distinct fruity spice notes of sassafras forest. It develops with spices from the whole bunch inclusion and French oak barrels. The palate is elegantly structured, offering a harmonious interplay of vibrant acidity and silky tannins. Mid-palate, the wine reveals layers of cranberry and pomegranate, complemented by a whisper of earthy minerality.

The 2024 release is more about the earthiness and bramble reflective of the majority of the fruit coming from Little Creek and Basket Range, but it still sits comfortably in our usual house style - a dance of aromatics and tannin. Mansons Farm Pinot Noir is hand crafted in very limited quantities. Our 2016 is medium ruby red in colour with a bouquet of black cherry, savoury brown spice, and notes of baronial flower. On the palate, a dense, dark berry entry and hints of spice are supported by an elegant tannin structure. Dark cherry and spice aromas integrate nicely with a hint of forest floor (sous bois).

“As opposed to other Victorian pinot regions, the defining thing is that we’ve got three bodies of water around us,” says Garagiste’s Barnaby Flanders, who has worked in the region for two decades, including at Moorooduc Estate. Like many youthful Australian wine regions, that exploration of site differences and mapping out areas of similarity to identify subregions is a critical one.
