The only downside is that it is quite a ways out of the city center, past the Taitung Airport. Taitung Forest Park (臺東森林公園) is the largest green space in Taitung city. This is the last stop for my pan-taiwan island railway trip on the east coast. I arrived like about 4pm from hualien and took thr night local train to kaohsiung at about 7pm. Guanshan is a small town, about 40 kilometers north of Taitung City, in the bucolic East Rift Valley, one of the most charming areas of Taiwan. This is a great place for relaxed bicycle rides along rice paddies with the high mountains of the Central Mountain Range as beautiful backdrop.
